Goliad County Courthouse

Goliad, Texas

This courthouse was constructed in 1894 and shares its design with the Caldwell County Courthouse completed in the same year. The Second Empire design is often attributed to Alfred Giles of San Antonio but is more likely the creation of Henry E.M. Guidon, an intermittent associate of Giles. It was constructed with blue sandstone from Muldoon with string courses of dark red Pecos sandstone. The central clock tower was destroyed by a hurricane in 1942 but was restored in 2003. The multiple towers are topped with blue-gray mansard roofs. The courthouse is enshrouded by mature live oaks, the most famous of which is the Goliad Hanging Tree on the north side of the courthouse lawn.
