Victoria County Courthouse
Victoria, Texas
This courthouse was built in 1892 and designed in the Romanesque Revival style by James Riely Gordon. The Victoria County Courthouse holds a number of similarities to the Fayette County Courthouse in La Grange, also designed by Gordon and built one year prior to the Victoria County Courthouse. Both courthouses are square in plan and originally had an open air atrium at the center that allowed courthouse rooms to be ventilated. Both courthouses also feature a prominent tower on the east elevation, denoting it as the front of the building. The Victoria County Courthouse is the more elaborate of the two, with dramatic two-story arching windows, arcade patios and corner balconies.
