Caldwell County Courthouse
Lockhart, Texas
Construction on this courthouse began in 1893 and was completed the following year. The Second Empire design is often attributed to San Antonio architect, Alfred Giles, but is more likely the creation of Giles’ intermittent associate, Henry E.M. Guidon. The courthouse is constructed of blue sandstone from Muldoon and trimmed with red sandstone from Pecos. It features multiple towers topped with dark green mansard roofs, and the central tower has a four-sided Seth Thomas clock and a 900-pound bell. The design was replicated in the construction of the Goliad County Courthouse, built in the same year as the Caldwell County Courthouse.
